Candidate for Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Jeon Jae-su stated in his opening remarks at the National Assembly confirmation hearing on the 14th, "I have thought that the new sea route of the Arctic will be a driving force for the transformation of global economic activities, and I will quickly establish a base in preparation for the Arctic route era," he said.
He continued, "Through the Arctic route, we will overcome the current capital region-centered system and integrate administrative, industrial, judicial, and financial functions to equip South Korea with a new growth engine," and "We will host the UN Ocean Conference in our country to widely publicize our intention to lead the Arctic route and elevate South Korea's status," he said.
Candidate Jeon also expressed his intention to promote innovation for the sustainable development of the fisheries industry. He said, "We will transition coastal fisheries to a total allowable catch management system and promote policies to increase productivity in aquaculture through smart innovation more rapidly," and "We will focus on managing the supply of seafood to provide fresh seafood to the public stably," he conveyed.
Candidate Jeon also revealed his ambition to strengthen the competitiveness of shipping ports by building a 'K-Marine Powerhouse.' He said, "The increasingly visible eco-friendly regulations of the international community are approaching as a major challenge to our shipping and port industry," and "We will turn the crisis of global environmental regulations into an opportunity by reorganizing the national fleet centered on eco-friendly ships," he emphasized.
He continued, "We will quickly preempt the future ship market through rapid technological development of zero-carbon ships such as ammonia and hydrogen and Korean-style fully autonomous ships," and "Busan Port will solidify its status as a hub port through the development of the Jinhae New Port with smart automation technology, and we will establish regional customized development strategies for ports nationwide without delay," he announced.
Candidate Jeon said, "So that people across the country can enjoy the benefits of the sea, we will build a complex marine leisure tourism city in key coastal areas and enhance regional economic vitality by equipping small fishing villages and coasts with infrastructure suitable for marine resources such as marine healing, fishing village experiences, eco-tourism, and fishing," and "In the case of offshore wind power, we will set planned sites considering environmental and acceptability factors sufficiently and actively develop profit-sharing models that can coexist with local residents and fishermen to support it as a turning point for South Korea's energy transition," he conveyed.
He added, "To meet the public's expectations for a safe and clean sea, we will defend marine sovereignty and take the lead in creating a clean sea," and "We will firmly manage marine territories such as Dokdo, territorial sea baselines, and uninhabited islands, and ensure there are no gaps in marine safety management to protect the lives and property of the people," he added.
