Intensive Inspection of High-Risk Trees and Vulnerable Routes... Diagnosis and Monitoring Using Precision Equipment

[Financial News] The Korea Forest Service announced on the 14th that in preparation for typhoons and heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, it will conduct joint public-private safety inspections of street trees nationwide with tree safety inspection experts and local governments until the 18th.
This inspection will focus on old and large trees that are relatively vulnerable to storm damage, as well as species like plane trees that are susceptible to wind, and will intensively examine areas where safety accidents are a concern, such as densely populated areas.
During this inspection, they will visually examine risk factors such as interference from contact between surrounding facilities and tree canopies, and assess the overall health of the trees. They will also conduct an in-depth diagnosis of the structural stability inside the trees using precision equipment like non-destructive tomography scanners.
Additionally, trees that are found to have high risk levels in the diagnosis will undergo immediate safety measures such as pruning, reinforcement of supports, or removal, followed by continuous monitoring. Furthermore, they plan to continuously analyze the risk factors of street trees to establish a management system for key inspection items and management plans, thereby strengthening the management of vulnerable trees.
Choi Young-tae, Director of the Forest Protection Bureau of the Korea Forest Service, said, “Street trees are a valuable green infrastructure that provides cool shade during heatwaves, but with frequent weather anomalies these days, it is important to ensure safety through pre-inspections,” adding, “We will cultivate valuable and healthy street trees so that everyone can safely enjoy their benefits.”
