[Financial News] The confirmation hearings for 16 ministerial candidates of the first cabinet of the Lee Jae-myung government began on the 14th. The Democratic Party of Korea is urging a swift confirmation process, citing the president's high approval ratings, while the People Power Party is demanding thorough verification and calling for the withdrawal of nominations for five specific candidates.
Kim Byung-gi, Acting Leader and Floor Leader of the Democratic Party, stated at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, "The Democratic Party's criteria for confirmation hearings are practicality, ability, and performance, and the candidate's tendencies or professions are not issues," adding, "What matters is whether they have the qualities and abilities to quickly overcome economic, livelihood, and trade crises and produce results that the public can feel."
Kim also emphasized, "We will firmly respond to outdated 'hearsay' personal attacks and slander, and excessive obstruction of state affairs," adding, "As the high approval rating of over 60% indicates, the public's expectations for the Lee Jae-myung government are very high. We will support the cabinet promptly so they can work properly."
On the other hand, Song Eon-seok, Chairman of the Emergency Response Committee and Floor Leader of the People Power Party, said at the emergency committee meeting held at the National Assembly on the same day, "The first cabinet appointments of the Lee Jae-myung government are overall inadequate, and strictly speaking, all are disqualified," adding, "They are employing a 'bed soccer' tactic like Kim Min-seok (Prime Minister) to endure a day with a hollow hearing without documents and witnesses."
He specifically pointed out Kang Sun-woo, Minister of Gender Equality and Family; Lee Jin-sook, Minister of Education; Kwon Oh-eul, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs; Cho Hyun, Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Chung Dong-young, Minister of Unification, saying, "They do not even deserve a hearing," and urged, "The president should withdraw the nominations of the five unqualified individuals."
Candidate Kang is accused of staff abuse, Candidate Lee of plagiarism, Candidate Kwon of false work records, Candidate Cho of land speculation, and Candidate Chung of solar energy splitting investment allegations.
