Yoo Jeong-bok, Mayor of Incheon, Discusses Establishment of Research Institute with Georgia Tech President
【Financial News Incheon=Han Gap-soo Reporter】 The establishment of a Georgia Tech research institute at the Incheon Global Campus is being actively pursued.
Incheon City announced on the 14th that Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok visited the main campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta, USA, on the 11th (local time) and discussed various ways of mutual cooperation, including the establishment of a Georgia Tech research institute and global industry-academic cooperation in the field of AI advanced autonomous manufacturing, with Ángel Cabrera, President of Georgia Tech.
As a result, the Incheon Economic Agency will soon begin working-level consultations with Georgia Tech.
The city plans to create a world-class research, education, and industry convergence hub and establish an ecosystem where innovation circulates by attracting the Georgia Tech research institute (AI advanced autonomous manufacturing field) along with the infrastructure of the five universities residing in the Incheon Global Campus (IGC), the Korea Stanford Center (smart city research), and the Marine Jugend Korea Institute (marine convergence research).
Georgia Tech is a world-leading public research university in the field of science and technology, established in 1885, and ranked 36th in the world according to the '2024 Times Higher Education (THE)' rankings.
In particular, it boasts a global top-tier position, ranking 12th in the world in engineering & IT and 22nd in computer science, and its aerospace engineering ranked 2nd in the U.S. for both undergraduate and graduate programs according to the '2024 U.S. News & World Report'.
Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok said, “If the Georgia Tech research institute is established in Incheon, it is expected to greatly contribute to promoting innovation in the advanced manufacturing industry and strengthening national research capabilities.”
Ángel Cabrera, President of Georgia Tech, said, “It will be a great opportunity to simultaneously strengthen the manufacturing industries of both regions in connection with numerous Korean companies that have entered Georgia.”
