Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong returns immediately after US business trip
Chairman Lee entered Gimpo Business Aviation Center at 6:40 a.m. on the same day and met with reporters, stating, "I completed various schedules during this US business trip." Regarding the outlook for improved performance in the second half, he said, "I will work hard." Samsung Electronics announced on the 8th that its operating profit for the second quarter of this year was estimated at 4.6 trillion won, a 55.94% decrease compared to the same period last year. Thus, a rebound in performance in the second half is necessary.
Chairman Lee attended the 'Allen & Co Media Conference' held at the Sun Valley resort in Idaho, USA, from the 9th to the 13th (local time). This annual event is held privately and only invited guests can attend, mainly gathering key figures from the media and information technology (IT) sectors, and is also known as the 'Billionaires' Summer Camp'.
According to foreign media, this year, attendees included Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, Mary Barra, chairman and CEO of General Motors (GM), Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney Company, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, and Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. Also, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, Bill Gates, former CEO of Microsoft (MS), and Rupert Murdoch, former chairman of Fox News, were reportedly on the invitation list.
From Korean companies, Chairman Lee Jae-yong was reportedly the only one to receive an invitation. At this event, Chairman Lee is expected to have met with big tech leaders to discuss new business opportunities and explore ways to overcome crises in core businesses such as semiconductors (DS).
Chairman Lee is also likely to attend another global CEO social gathering, the 'Google Camp', held at the Rocco Forte Verdura Golf Resort in southern Sicily, Italy, at the end of this month. This event is organized annually by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Both the attendees and the content of the event are kept confidential.
Meanwhile, Chairman Lee, who was indicted on charges of unfair merger and accounting fraud and acquitted in the first and second trials, is awaiting the final judgment of the Supreme Court on the 17th regarding this case. If acquitted by the Supreme Court, Chairman Lee is expected to be free from legal risks and focus more on discovering future growth engines.
