The United States warned that if President Donald Trump does not achieve the desired results in trade negotiations with other countries, he will actually impose tariffs on August 1, the deadline set by Trump. The tariffs notified to other countries by the United States are not a negotiation tactic but a real intention to impose them.
According to ABC Broadcast on the 13th (local time), Kevin Hassett, Chairman of the White House National Economic Council, said, "If President Trump does not have what he considers a sufficiently good agreement, tariffs will really be imposed." He added, "However, conversations are ongoing, and we will see what happens."
Additionally, Chairman Hassett mentioned that President Trump recently announced tariff rates for countries such as the European Union (EU, reciprocal tariff rate 30%), Mexico (30%), and Canada (35%), stating that Trump desires more agreements.
He explained, "President Trump has seen some of the preliminary agreements negotiated by Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and the rest of the trade team and thinks the agreements need to improve."
Furthermore, Chairman Hassett stated that the reason President Trump notified Brazil of a 50% tariff, higher than other countries, is because he is very dissatisfied with negotiations with Brazil and Brazil's actions.
He explained, "The reason Brazil's tariff is much higher than other countries is that President Trump is dissatisfied with Bolsonaro." President Trump claimed that the trial of his close ally, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, for coup plotting is 'political persecution.' On the 9th, President Trump notified Brazil of a 50% reciprocal tariff, an increase of 40 percentage points from the existing 10%.
Chairman Hassett argued that even if President Trump imposes a 50% tariff on copper as announced, the costs for companies in the United States that manufacture various products using copper will not increase. He stated, "It is expected that countries and people dumping copper in the United States will bear most of this tariff."
