Kumgangsan has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee confirmed Kumgangsan, applied for by the North Korean side, as a World Heritage Site at a meeting held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France on the 13th (local time). The official name is 'Kumgangsan' (Mt. Kumgang - Diamond Mountain from the Sea). Kumgangsan has been considered a representative mountain of the Korean Peninsula along with Baekdusan.
Centered around the 1,638m high Birobong, it is composed of numerous peaks, strange rocks, waterfalls, and ponds, spanning the northern Taebaek Mountain Range, Hoeyang County and Tongcheon County in Gangwon Province, and Goseong County.
Kumgangsan has become North Korea's third World Heritage Site. According to UNESCO, North Korea currently holds 2 World Heritage Sites, including 'Goguryeo Tombs' (2004) and 'Kaesong Historic Sites' (2013), and 5 Intangible Cultural Heritage items.
