[Financial News] In Pakistan, a father shot and killed his 16-year-old daughter for not deleting her account on the video platform TikTok.
According to the AFP news website on the 13th, Pakistani police stated that "the girl's father demanded that she delete her TikTok account, but when she refused, he killed her," and they arrested the father.
The police stated that this father committed what is called an 'honor killing.' Honor killings refer to the act of killing female family members for not listening to male relatives regarding marriage, employment, etc., or for tarnishing the family's honor.
The police in Rawalpindi (a region near the capital Islamabad) where the incident occurred explained that the victim's family initially tried to disguise the murder as a suicide.
In Pakistan, hundreds of such honor killings targeting women occur every year. According to the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch, about 1000 women are killed in honor killings in Pakistan annually.
In December 2023, an 18-year-old woman was killed by her father and three others after a photo of her sitting with her boyfriend was shared on social media.
In 2021, a 27-year-old woman was killed by her Pakistani-American boyfriend, Zahir Jaffer, after rejecting his marriage proposal. She was beheaded. Jaffer was later sentenced to death.
