[Financial News] As the unprecedented heatwave continues, the courier industry is battling the heat. They plan to ensure the safety of delivery drivers exposed to heat-related illnesses by granting them the autonomy to stop work voluntarily and mandating rest periods.
According to the industry on the 13th, CJ Logistics has decided to prioritize the health and safety of delivery drivers and logistics center workers by granting them the right to stop work voluntarily and not holding them accountable for delayed deliveries.
CJ Logistics has already recommended through the delivery driver's work app in June to avoid excessive deliveries in preparation for heatwaves and heat-related illnesses and to stop deliveries immediately if symptoms occur. To this end, they plan to send official letters to clients requesting understanding for delivery delays.
They also plan to encourage the active use of guaranteed vacations for delivery drivers to manage their health through adequate rest. August 14-15 will be designated as 'No Delivery Day' to allow all delivery drivers to stop deliveries and rest.
Additionally, during the hot season, they have mandated a rest period of 10 minutes every 50 minutes or 20 minutes every 100 minutes at all workplaces. Ice machines and saline glucose have been provided on-site, and 'Heatwave Emergency Kits' consisting of cool mats and ice packs have been distributed.
Hanjin is avoiding excessive deliveries during heatwaves, prioritizing the health and safety of delivery workers. In this regard, Hanjin recently installed additional air conditioners at the Daejeon Mega Hub Terminal to create a comfortable working environment. They apply the '50 minutes work, 10 minutes rest' principle when the workplace temperature exceeds 33 degrees Celsius and conduct related training regularly.
They also plan to distribute ice water to delivery drivers nationwide and operate additional hub terminals to secure morning work hours for delivery drivers. Flexible work operations are supported to avoid the hottest hours for deliveries.
Hanjin has been supporting delivery drivers with cooling bags, cooling bottles, and necklace fans for a safe working environment in the summer. Additionally, during the summer season, they operate a 'Thank You Box' on the first floor of the new building in Jung-gu, Seoul, providing free 500mL bottled water for all transport workers.
Lotte Global Logistics is conducting safety guideline briefings (heat-related illness prevention guidelines) and education during the hot season and is building rest facilities at currently operating sites. They are also supplying water to delivery drivers during the hot season and are reviewing additional measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
A Hanjin representative said, "As the nationwide heatwave threatens the safety of delivery drivers, we ask for your understanding that deliveries may be temporarily delayed in some areas," adding, "We will do our best to prioritize the safety of delivery drivers and related workers while minimizing customer inconvenience."
