[Financial News] Coupang announced on the 13th that small and medium enterprises in 'population decline areas' designated by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, such as Gyeongbuk Yeongdeok, Gyeongnam Hamyang, Jeonbuk Imsil, and Jeonnam Yeongam, have increased their sales by expanding their sales channels nationwide through Rocket Delivery.
The population of these areas exceeded 100,000 in the 1970s, but has now decreased to 20,000 to 50,000.
Coupang plans to expand 'Coupang Zone (Rocket Delivery available areas)' to population decline areas, contributing to the revitalization of the local economy by increasing the sales of SMEs and creating jobs, as well as enhancing customer convenience.
The sales of the food manufacturer 'The Road to the East Sea' in Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk, increased from 180 million won in the first year of entering Coupang in 2022 to 1.258 billion won last year. This company makes the local specialty 'Hongyeong's Red Crab White Soy Sauce' with red crab extract.
Lee Jae-hyung (32), the CEO, said, "I started a manufacturing company in 2015 based on my mother's recipe, who ran a crab restaurant for 30 years, but was rejected over 100 times due to the limitations of a brandless SME," adding, "Now, we are hiring more employees and expanding the factory."
The average age of employees at this company is 36, although the average age in Yeongdeok-gun is 57.
The frozen vegetable company 'Greenpia' in Osu-myeon, Imsil, Jeonbuk, produces over 20 products, including Coupang's private brand (PB) minced garlic and green onions, and recorded sales of 6 billion won last year. The first-year sales with Coupang in 2018 were 2 billion won.
The sales of the tea manufacturer 'Herb & Tea' in Hamyang, Gyeongnam, increased from 800 million won in 2022 to 3 billion won last year.
A Coupang representative said, "We plan to strengthen our co-growth policy by increasing Rocket Delivery and marketing support for SMEs in population decline areas, allowing companies to focus solely on product production."
