[Financial News] Hwang Ui-jo (33), a former national soccer team player who is appealing after receiving a suspended sentence for illegal filming charges, has signed a 2-year contract extension with his team, Türkiye's professional soccer club Alanyaspor, continuing his career in Europe.
Despite the privacy issues that caused significant controversy among soccer fans, his skills have been recognized locally.
Alanyaspor officially announced on the 12th (Korean time) through the club's official SNS, "We have extended the contract with Hwang Ui-jo, whose contract had expired, for 2 years," and wished him success in the new season.
This means that Hwang Ui-jo, who was at risk of becoming a free agent after his contract ended on the 30th of last month, has been given another opportunity to play in the European league.
Hwang Ui-jo joined the English Premier League (EPL) Nottingham Forest in August 2022, successfully entering the big league, but soon moved around several teams such as Greece's Olympiacos, K League's FC Seoul, and England's Norwich City, continuing his loan career. He had an unstable career, earning the label of a 'journeyman'.
However, after a complete transfer to Alanyaspor in September last year, he began to perform stably. He played in 30 regular league matches last season, scoring 7 goals and providing 2 assists, and in all official matches, he recorded 7 goals and 3 assists in 33 matches, making a decisive contribution to the team's retention in Türkiye's first division. His scoring ability and team contribution appear to have been the biggest factors in the contract renewal.
Hwang Ui-jo is currently on trial for illegally filming sexual videos without the other party's consent on four occasions from June to September 2022. He was sentenced to 1 year in prison with a 2-year suspended sentence in the first trial and has appealed, so news of his contract renewal is expected to spark another heated debate within and outside the soccer community.
Attention is focused on his new challenge on the Türkiye stage and the outcome of the future legal battle.
