[Financial News]  It is expected that a 50% tariff rate, which will be implemented in the U.S. from August 1, will also apply to refined copper.
Bloomberg News reported on the 11th (local time), citing sources, that President Donald Trump of the United States plans to include 'refined copper' in the 50% tariff he announced for copper.
Refined copper is the largest category of copper imported by the U.S.
Because it is an essential material in various industries such as power grids, construction, automobile manufacturing, and home appliances, the imposition of tariffs is expected to have widespread effects.
It is also reported that the U.S. will apply a 50% tariff rate to semi-finished industrial products made from processed copper.
However, a White House official stated that the tariff measures on refined copper and others are not finalized until President Trump makes the final announcement.
Previously, on the 8th, President Trump announced that he would impose a 50% tariff on copper to revive the U.S. copper industry.
He further stated on social media, "Copper is needed for semiconductors, aircraft, ships, ammunition, data centers, lithium-ion batteries, radar systems, missile defense systems, and even the hypersonic weapons we are making a lot of," adding, "Copper is the second most used material by the Department of Defense."
Meanwhile, the Trump administration's basis for imposing a 50% tariff on copper is 'Trade Expansion Act Section 232', which grants the president the authority to restrict imports of items that negatively impact national security.
