[Financial News] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 11th that it has installed a 'VR (Virtual Reality) Solution' for 16500TEU-class eco-friendly container ships at the headquarters of Taiwan Evergreen.
VR Solution was developed to allow operators of methanol dual-fuel ships to fully learn the equipment in a virtual space before being deployed to actual ship operations.
As environmental regulations have recently been strengthened, the construction of eco-friendly ships has surged, and shipping companies are in urgent need of introducing training programs for crew members to operate new equipment.
In response, Samsung Heavy Industries developed a program that allows the inspection of the engine room and methanol fuel supply facilities in a virtual space implemented based on 3D design data without boarding the ship directly, and provided it under the agreed conditions with Evergreen.
Through the VR solution, crew members can efficiently operate equipment with more complex systems compared to existing diesel engine ships, and can also undergo repetitive training to prepare for emergencies such as fuel leaks and onboard fires. It is expected to reduce operational risks due to equipment malfunction or misuse and maintenance costs.
Samsung Heavy Industries and Evergreen have decided to maintain a continuous cooperative relationship, including not only the introduction of the VR solution but also joint research for the introduction of autonomous navigation (SAS) technology for ships in operation.
Lee Dong-yeon, head of Samsung Heavy Industries Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Research Institute (Vice President), said, "The VR solution tailored to customer needs will play a role in enhancing the operational stability of eco-friendly ships," adding, "Samsung Heavy Industries will continue to develop various customer-tailored solutions by utilizing VR technology capabilities."
