The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 10th that it will urgently support 35 billion won in special disaster safety management grants due to the spread of damage such as heat-related illnesses and livestock deaths caused by severe heatwaves this year, and the ongoing drought centered in the Gangwon region.
This is a measure to implement the president's directive to "quickly execute possible measures so that vulnerable groups and livestock farmers do not suffer due to the heatwave," explained the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
This support will be used for △providing cooling supplies to vulnerable groups such as the elderly living alone and residents of jjokbangchon (small room villages) △supporting heatwave prevention supplies (bottled water, cool sleeves, etc.) for outdoor workers △installing heatwave reduction facilities (such as shade structures) △supporting shading nets and water trucks for livestock farmers.
Additional funds will also be provided to secure extra water resources for the Gangwon region, which is experiencing severe drought.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to encourage local governments to quickly execute the disaster special grant tax and, in accordance with the president's directive, check whether cooling shelters operated by local governments and public institutions are being properly managed and utilized.
Kim Min-jae, acting Minister of the Interior and Safety, said, "To minimize public damage caused by this year's heatwave and drought, we will mobilize all available resources to ensure there are no blind spots in the response."
