[Financial News] A 70-year-old man who assaulted his mentally ill daughter with a blunt object after hearing dismissive words was sentenced to a suspended prison term in an appeal trial.

On the 11th, the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 3-1 (Chief Judge Im Seonji) sentenced Mr. A (70), who was indicted on charges of special injury, to one year in prison with a two-year suspension, the same as the original trial.

Mr. A was put on trial for hitting his daughter Ms. B (in her 30s) several times on the head with a blunt object at their home in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, in June last year. Ms. B sustained injuries to her forehead, but her life was not in danger.

Mr. A was investigated for committing the crime because his daughter, who suffers from schizophrenia, often caused disturbances by throwing things while drunk.

The first trial court stated, "Considering the details of the crime, the responsibility is heavy," but also noted, "The victim's verbal abuse and harassment of her parents, the poor relationship between them, the fact that the defendant suffers from Parkinson's disease while fulfilling his duties as a father living with the victim, and the fact that he committed the crime after hearing dismissive remarks from the victim were taken into account."

Parkinson's disease is a degenerative brain disorder that occurs when the dopamine neurotransmitter system in the brain is destroyed. It is accompanied by symptoms such as tremors, slowed movements, and muscle stiffness.

The prosecution appealed on grounds of unfair sentencing. However, the appellate court dismissed it, stating, "The victim expressed that she does not wish for the defendant to be punished after the original sentence was handed down."
