Meeting of the Trilateral Joint Chiefs of Staff held in Yongsan on the 11th
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the 11th, at the Trilateral Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting (Tri-CHOD) held that day, Kim Myung-soo, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Kane, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Yoshida Yoshihide, Chief of Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, evaluated the regional security environment, including North Korea's military threats, and discussed ways to strengthen security cooperation among the three countries.
The Trilateral Joint Chiefs of Staff meeting was held in Tokyo, Japan, last year, and this is the first time it has been held in South Korea.
In his opening remarks, Chairman Kim expressed gratitude to Chairman Kane and Chief of Staff Yoshida for visiting South Korea, saying, "The fact that the meeting is being held in South Korea as part of a rotation among the three countries shows that trilateral security cooperation is being stably established in the Indo-Pacific region and globally."
He continued, "This year's meeting was held in South Korea for the first time, following the 2023 Camp David Trilateral Summit, which established trilateral security cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan."
Furthermore, "The fact that the Chief of Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces visited South Korea for the first time in 15 years for this meeting signifies that trilateral security cooperation has become much more mature and solidified," he evaluated.
Chairman Kim emphasized, "In a situation where North Korea's nuclear and missile threats are escalating and regional security challenges persist, maintaining the momentum of trilateral security cooperation and continuously developing it is very important," adding, "I hope that today's meeting will further strengthen security cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan and develop it in a future-oriented manner."
