Contract with Major Japanese Battery Company for Natural Graphite Anode Material
[Financial News] POSCO Future M is accelerating its efforts to penetrate the global market by securing major Japanese battery companies as customers.
POSCO Future M announced on the 11th that it has signed an anode material supply contract with a Japanese battery company. It plans to produce natural graphite anode materials at the Sejong plant and supply them to batteries manufactured for electric vehicles in Japan. However, the specific contract target, duration, and scale were not disclosed by mutual agreement.
POSCO Future M is developing a variety of natural graphite and artificial graphite anode materials to secure a broad product portfolio and respond to customer needs. In addition to commercializing silicon anode materials, it has enhanced price competitiveness by promoting process innovation to increase anode material productivity.
The competitiveness of the supply chain through the establishment of a self-sufficient system for graphite ore and intermediate materials is also a strength. POSCO Future M, along with the POSCO Group, is pursuing the acquisition of an independent supply chain covering the entire process from raw materials to material production in response to the supply chain diversification movements and trade regulations of countries such as the United States and the European Union (EU).
Specifically, for natural graphite anode materials, it is pursuing the internalization of raw materials by securing graphite ore in countries other than China, such as Africa, and producing spherical graphite domestically as an intermediate material. For artificial graphite anode materials, it is working towards supply chain independence by processing coke from domestic POSCO steelworks to manufacture graphite raw materials.
A POSCO Future M representative stated, "We plan to continuously expand our customer base through the expansion of our product portfolio based on differentiated technology, enhancement of manufacturing capabilities, and supply chain competitiveness."
