[Financial News] Donald Trump, President of the United States, stated that he is imposing a blanket tariff plan of 15% or 20% on most trading partners.
On the 10th (local time), President Trump, in a phone interview with Kristen Welker, host of NBC News' 'Meet the Press', said, "Whether it's 20% or 15%, all other countries will have to pay (the tariffs)," and announced plans to proceed with related work.
Regarding concerns that the imposition of tariffs could negatively impact the stock market or raise prices, President Trump claimed that the stock market hit a new high that day and that the view on tariffs is positive.
The Trump administration sent letters this week containing the tariff rates to be imposed on 22 countries. Among them, Brazil was notified of a 50% tariff.
In the call, Trump stated that not all countries will receive letters, but instead will be notified of the tariff rates.
After the call, President Trump announced on social media plans to impose a 35% tariff on imports from Canada, a USMCA member country, starting from the 1st of next month.
In the NBC News interview, he also announced plans to send letters containing new tariff rates to the European Union (EU).
Meanwhile, Maroš Šefčovič, EU Trade Commissioner, stated in the European Parliament that both sides are negotiating daily to avoid U.S. tariff imposition.
The EU is reportedly prepared to impose retaliatory tariffs on $100 billion worth of U.S. products if negotiations fail.
President Trump also revealed new agreements to provide U.S. weapons to Ukraine with NATO and Ukraine.
