The Proportion of Female Officials in Local Governments Above Grade 5 Increased by 4%p in One Year

According to the 'Local Government Officials Personnel Statistics' by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on the 29th, as of the end of last year, the total number of local government officials nationwide was 315,205, an increase of 0.6% compared to 2023 (313,296). The increase in local government officials was 2.3% in 2022 and 1.4% in 2023, showing a gradual slowdown.
The proportion of female officials was 51.3%, an increase of 0.9%p compared to the previous year (50.4%). The proportion of women among officials above grade 5 was 27.4% in 2022, 30.8% in 2023, and 34.7% in 2024, continuing to rise.
Among the 17 cities and provinces, Gyeonggi-do had the largest number of officials (56,948), followed by Seoul (48,792), Gyeongbuk (24,579), and Gyeongnam (23,530). By job category, general positions accounted for 99.4% of the total with 313,272, followed by specific positions with 984, special positions with 670, and political positions with 279. The proportion of grade 6 was the highest at 30.1%, and the proportion of grade 5 or higher was 8.3%.
The number of new appointments was 18,772, a decrease of 6.9% compared to the previous year (20,173). The number of retirees was 15,913, a slight increase compared to the previous year (15,588). Retirement due to reaching the age limit was 37.0%, voluntary resignation and honorary retirement were 35.2% and 18.2%, respectively. The number of people on leave was 31,130.
