【Financial News Ulsan=Choi Su-sang Reporter】 The fixed offshore wind power project being promoted off the coast of Jeongja Port, Buk-gu, Ulsan, faced strong opposition from residents from the start.
According to Buk-gu and the industry, a resident briefing related to the fixed offshore wind power project was held on the 29th at the Gangdong Cultural Center in Buk-gu, but it was disrupted due to residents' opposition.
Residents of the nearby Sanha-dong area apartments opposed the offshore wind power project, claiming it would obstruct the view of the Gangdong Pebble Beach, where a large-scale tourist complex is planned.
They also claimed that the offshore wind power project would infringe on health rights and property rights, and cause damage to fishermen due to changes in tides and fish spawning abnormalities.
Angry residents, stating that the project had been carried out in the dark without gathering residents' opinions for the past 7 years, hung banners saying "Immediately withdraw the unilateral wind power project that ignores residents," and some shouted or left while throwing giveaway items.
The project, promoted by Dongnamhaean Offshore Wind Power Co., Ltd., involves installing 18 fixed offshore wind turbines in the eastern waters of Jeongja Port to produce a total of 144㎿ of power. The plan is to start construction in January 2028 and begin commercial operation in January 2030.
The implementing company received initial approval from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in 2018, and is currently conducting a public notice of the environmental impact assessment report for residents.
The installation site is approximately 3 km away from the shore. It is predicted to affect the landscape of major tourist attractions in the area, such as Gangdong Central Park and Gangdong Auto Camping Site.
Dongnamhaean Offshore Wind Power stated that as the project is in its early stages, they will decide whether to proceed by gathering residents' opinions while conducting environmental impact assessments. An additional resident briefing will be held soon.
