[Financial News] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that it held the '18th Medical Device Day' ceremony at the Coex Magok Convention Center in Seoul on the 29th.
This event, themed 'Medical Devices with the Public, Envisioning a New Future!', is the first official event held since 'Medical Device Day' was designated as a statutory anniversary last April.
Medical Device Day is held annually since 2007 to commemorate May 29, the enactment and promulgation date of the 'Medical Device Act', to inform the public about the safety and importance of medical devices and to promote industry development.
About 250 people from the government, industry, and academia related to medical devices attended the ceremony, where awards were given to contributors to the development of the medical device industry and safety management.
The Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit was awarded to Park Jong-rae, CEO of Poscom, who developed the world's first battery-type portable X-ray equipment. The Order of Service Merit was awarded to Professor Son Ho-seong of Korea University College of Medicine, who contributed to policy development as the chairman of the Medical Device Committee.
In addition, four Presidential Citations and four Prime Minister's Citations were awarded to individuals and organizations. Awardees included Professor Yang Hyung-chul of Seoul National University Dental Hospital, Professor Yeo Jong-chul of KAIST, CEO Ham Eun-kyung of JW Medical, Team Leader Kang Jun-bong of Ewha Medical Center, Vice President Baek Dong-heon of Dankook University, and Insurance Director Jo Jeong-ho of the Korean Medical Association.
On this day, KAIST AI Research Institute Director Jeong Song presented a keynote speech on 'What is AI and Where is it Going?' outlining the vision of AI technology to be applied to future medical devices.
The event also featured booths for exhibiting and experiencing innovative medical devices, focusing on informing the public about advanced medical technologies.
Following the ceremony, the MFDS plans to hold the '2025 Medical Device Insight Conference' until May 30, expanding communication with the industry through 10 thematic seminars and forums, including △Medical Device Policy Briefing △Overseas Regulatory Agency Seminar △Medical Device Single Audit Program (MDSAP) Certification Strategy Seminar.
Director Oh Yu-gyeong of the MFDS said, “This year is a meaningful year as Medical Device Day has been designated as a statutory anniversary,” and expressed hope that it will be a starting point to reflect on the achievements of medical devices in protecting public health and to design the future together.
Director Oh emphasized, “As the convergence of advanced technologies such as AI, robotics, and virtual/augmented reality with medical devices accelerates, the MFDS will actively support by establishing institutional foundations such as the implementation of the 'Digital Medical Products Act'.
The MFDS plans to continue supporting domestic medical devices to secure competitiveness in the global market through cooperation with related institutions such as the National Assembly, government, industry, and academia.
