[Financial News] The Korea Forest Service announced on the 29th that it has inspected the progress of the National Saemangeum Arboretum construction project in Jeonbuk Province in preparation for the summer rainy season.
During the inspection, they focused on checking safety accident prevention measures and risk factors due to floods during the rainy season, and discussed countermeasures.
According to the Korea Forest Service's plan for arboretum construction by climate and vegetation zone, the National Saemangeum Arboretum, the third to be constructed, is the first coastal type arboretum in Korea, being built on reclaimed land of 151 hectares. With a total project cost of 208.7 billion won, the construction began in 2023 with the goal of completion by 2027, and currently shows a 28% progress rate.
The National Saemangeum Arboretum is expected to play a key role as a new carbon sink by preserving coastal plant biodiversity through the green landscape of the Saemangeum district. Additionally, it is expected to contribute to revitalizing the local economy by attracting more than 280,000 visitors annually, generating an economic ripple effect of 1.7 trillion won and creating 16,000 jobs.
Im Sang-seop, head of the Korea Forest Service, said, “We plan to focus on the creation of the arboretum to meet not only the traditional role of promoting forest biodiversity but also social and cultural expectations,” adding, “We will strive to make the National Saemangeum Arboretum a representative attraction in the Jeonbuk region that can drive the local economy.”
