[Financial News] The National Railroad Corporation announced on the 29th that it signed an 'SF6 Decomposition Technology MOU' with Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Western Power, and Gyeonggi-do for national greenhouse gas reduction at the 'SF6 Decomposition Center' completion ceremony held in Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do.
SF6 gas is used in railway electrical equipment such as switchgear due to its excellent insulation and non-flammable properties, but it is a representative greenhouse gas that requires eco-friendly treatment as it exacerbates global warming when disposed of.
The corporation, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and Korea Western Power signed a 'Joint Agreement for the Use of SF6 Decomposition and Neutralization Technology' in March 2023 and have been building an SF6 gas decomposition center at the site of the old Gunpo Substation, a disused railway site, and conducting research, support, and information sharing.
Through this agreement, they agreed to establish a cooperation system including △sharing research data for the operation of the decomposition center △establishing systems for technology dissemination △cooperating in providing waste SF6 and reducing site usage fees for the decomposition center △developing follow-up technology and expanding application in the railway sector.
The corporation expects that this will allow the decomposition center to process a total of 383 tons of SF6 gas generated from abandoned railway facilities in the future, saving 10.3 billion won in annual disposal costs.
Kim Yoon-yang, Head of SE Convergence Headquarters at the National Railroad Corporation, said, “We will continue to closely cooperate with related agencies to discover effective joint projects and strive to expand eco-friendly railway infrastructure for a sustainable future.”
