The proportion of women among local government officials has exceeded half and continues to increase, with the proportion of women above grade 5 also rising to 35% according to the survey.
According to the 'Local Government Officials Personnel Statistics' by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on the 29th, as of the end of last year, the total number of local government officials nationwide was 315,205, an increase of 0.6% compared to 2023 (313,296).
The growth rate of local government officials was 2.3% in 2022, 1.4% in 2023, and is gradually slowing down.
The proportion of female officials was 51.3%, an increase of 0.9 percentage points compared to the previous year (50.4%).
The proportion of women among officials above grade 5 continues to increase, from 27.4% in 2022, 30.8% in 2023, to 34.7% in 2024.
Among the 17 provinces and cities, Gyeonggi-do had the largest number of officials (56,948), followed by Seoul (48,792), Gyeongbuk (24,579), and Gyeongnam (23,530).
By job type, general positions accounted for 99.4% of the total with 313,272 people, followed by specific positions with 984, special positions with 670, and political positions with 279.
The proportion of grade 6 was the largest at 30.1%, while the proportion of grade 5 and above was 8.3%.
The number of new appointments was 18,772, a decrease of 6.9% compared to the previous year (20,173).
The number of retirees was 15,913, a slight increase compared to the previous year (15,588). Mandatory retirement accounted for 37.0%, voluntary resignation and honorary retirement accounted for 35.2% and 18.2%, respectively.
The number of people on leave was 31,130, an increase of 4.2% compared to the previous year, with parental leave accounting for 69.7%, long-term care leave 22.1%, and family care leave 5.4%.
The average time to be promoted from grade 9 to grade 5 was 22 years and 6 months, a decrease of 5 months compared to the previous year.
The average age of local government officials was 41.4 years, and the average length of service was 13.5 years.
