As environmental issues related to fast fashion emerge, the Ministry of Environment is launching the 'Clothing Environmental Council', a public-private council to minimize the environmental impact of the clothing industry and enhance sustainability.
According to the Ministry of Environment on the 20th, the Clothing Environmental Council was established to explore ways to enhance the sustainability of the domestic clothing industry, in response to criticisms that mass production and consumption of clothing result in significant environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions and incineration disposal.
The European Union (EU) and other major countries are rapidly introducing regulations such as bans on the disposal of unsold goods, eco-design regulations, producer responsibility recycling systems, and digital product passports (DPP).
At the same time, they are demanding the same environmental standards for imported products, so domestic clothing companies must incorporate reducing environmental impact and enhancing sustainability as essential elements in their management.
At the launch meeting, the trends in clothing-related regulations in major countries and the current status of domestic and international clothing recycling technologies will be reviewed, and tasks to be discussed by the Clothing Environmental Council will be set.
The Ministry of Environment plans to promote a management system to minimize environmental impact from production to distribution, recycling, and disposal of clothing in consultation with the industry through the Clothing Environmental Council.
Kim Go-eung, Director of the Resource Circulation Bureau at the Ministry of Environment, stated, “The transition to a sustainable clothing industry can be a great opportunity for our clothing industry,” and added, “We will cooperate as much as possible with the Clothing Environmental Council so that the domestic clothing industry can become a leading player in the global circular economy.”
