The '22nd Asia Security Summit', known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, will be held in Singapore from the 30th to the 1st of next month for three days.
On the 29th, the Ministry of Defense announced that although the Minister of Defense has attended every year, this year Cho Chang-rae, Director of Defense Policy, will participate as the representative.
The Ministry of Defense explained that this decision was made considering the current severe security situation on the Korean Peninsula and the schedule of Kim Sun-ho, Acting Minister of Defense (Vice Minister), in connection with the 6·3 presidential election.
The Ministry of Defense has participated since the 1st meeting in 2002, and since the 3rd meeting in 2004, the Minister has attended every session. This is the first absence of the Minister in 21 years.
The Ministry of Defense stated, "This year, considering the current severe security situation on the Korean Peninsula and the domestic political situation, the Director of Defense Policy will lead the delegation as the representative, with the Deputy Chief of Staff accompanying to conduct military diplomacy with allies and friendly nations."
During the meeting, Director Cho will attend the plenary session and hold talks with the U.S. Congressional delegation, Japan's Director General for Defense Policy, Australia's Director of Strategy, Policy, and Industry, Canada's Deputy Minister of National Defense, the Philippines' Deputy Minister of Strategic Assessment and Planning, and Poland's Deputy Minister of National Defense.
In the talks, they plan to evaluate the regional security situation, including the Korean Peninsula issue, and discuss practical defense and defense industry cooperation development plans with the respective countries.
The Asia Security Summit, held annually in Singapore, is organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in the UK and serves as a forum for defense ministers and senior military officials from Asia, Europe, and the United States to discuss security issues. It has been held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore since 2002, hence the name Shangri-La Dialogue.
