[Financial News] The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) All-Stars team, led by coach Kim Sang-sik, pulled off an upset victory against the prestigious English Premier League (EPL) club Manchester United (Man Utd). Meanwhile, Man Utd suffered embarrassment as they not only lost the UEFA Europa League (UEL) title but also faced boos from 70,000 spectators.
AFF All-Stars won 1-0 in a friendly match against Man Utd held at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the 28th. Coach Kim Sang-sik, recognized for leading the Vietnam national team to victory in the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup, took the helm of the All-Stars team, composed of top players from 12 AFF member countries.
In the 26th minute of the second half, the AFF All-Stars scored the opening goal as Maung Maung Lwin (Myanmar) calmly finished a sharp penetrating pass from Adrian Segecic (Australia). Despite the participation of key players like Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, and Casemiro, Man Utd failed to score an equalizer and ultimately succumbed.
After the match, coach Kim Sang-sik expressed, "I didn't expect to win against Man Utd. It is a very meaningful result as a coach," and added, "The special match with the All-Star players will remain an unforgettable memory." He continued, "Football is a sport where scoring one goal and preventing one is very difficult. I am satisfied with the victory through Lwin's winning goal."
This season, Man Utd recorded their worst performance in the EPL, suffering a humiliating defeat against the hastily assembled AFF All-Stars. Man Utd recorded their lowest points since the EPL's inception with 42 points and suffered a record 18 losses. Their final record was 11 wins, 9 draws, and 18 losses, finishing the season at a historic low of 15th place in the league.
Having been eliminated in the FA Cup round of 16 and the League Cup (Carabao Cup) quarterfinals, Man Utd, whose title of 'prestigious club' has become meaningless, ended the season without a trophy after losing to Son Heung-min's Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) final on the 22nd.
According to the BBC, 70,000 spectators booed as the final whistle blew due to Man Utd's disappointing performance. Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim said, "I feel guilty about the team's performance," and added, "The fans' boos could be a necessary stimulus for the players."
