Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office Indicts 3 for Possession of Weapon in Public Place
[Financial News] The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office has applied the newly established 'possession of weapon in public place' charge for the first time.
According to the legal community on the 29th, the Criminal Division 3 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Choi Soon-ho) indicted Mr. Hong, in his 40s, on charges of possession of a weapon in a public place under the Criminal Act for allegedly threatening library staff by wielding a baton at the Seoul National University Central Library on the 14th, questioning 'why there is a Xi Jinping reference room'.
Additionally, the Criminal Division 2 (Chief Prosecutor Jo Ara) indicted Mr. Han, who was wandering around with a weapon in the waiting room of the Seoul Station Hope Support Center, a facility for supporting the homeless, and the Criminal Division 7 (Chief Prosecutor Kwon Sung-hee) indicted Mr. Park, who was carrying a folding saw and swearing in a certain place in Jung-gu, Seoul.
This indictment is the first case where the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office has applied the charge of possession of a weapon in a public place.
The crime of possession of a weapon in a public place was established following the Shinrim Station and Seohyeon Station weapon disturbance incidents in 2023, due to criticism that there was no regulation to punish the act of possessing a weapon in a public place. It was announced and implemented on the 8th of last month. If convicted of this crime, one can face up to 3 years in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.
