[Financial News] Kim Moon-soo, the People Power Party presidential candidate, demanded the resignation of Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party candidate, on the 27th, citing that those related to his trial have been dying one after another. In response, candidate Lee countered that it was due to coercive investigations by the prosecution.
Candidate Kim listed five trials of candidate Lee, including the alleged preferential treatment case in Daejang-dong, at the 21st presidential election candidate debate organized by the National Election Commission, saying, "Like the movie 'Asura', there is corruption all around, and many people have been imprisoned and died during investigations," and pointed out, "Jeon Young-soo, the first chief secretary of Lee Jae-myung as Gyeonggi Governor, wrote in his will that Lee should quit politics, and that there should be no more sacrifices."
He then criticized the bills affecting candidate Lee's trials, such as the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act to suspend trials upon presidential election, promoted by the Democratic Party, saying, "Where is such a bizarre idea? Former Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon also called it a monster state and said Lee Jae-myung is the monster leader," and urged, "It is right to resign from the candidacy even now."
In response, candidate Lee said, "I have heard the unilateral claim without any basis," and countered, "(The deaths related to the trial) happened because the prosecution is trying to create a case that doesn't exist through coercive investigation, causing distress," and argued, "In a prosecution state, it is wrong to say someone is guilty just because they were indicted or a suspect just because they were reported."
He continued by mentioning that during the past Gyeonggi Governor election, Kim Moon-soo's camp members were punished for violating the Political Funds Act, saying, "He avoided punishment by claiming ignorance, but according to Kim's argument, shouldn't he take joint responsibility?" and questioned, "Why should I be punished for something I don't even know about?"
