3 out of 12 universities in Busan selected
The preliminary designation review results for the 2025 Glocal University 30 Phase 1 have selected three cases in Busan: Kyungseong University, Busan University of Foreign Studies as a standalone model, and Korea Maritime and Ocean University-National Mokpo Maritime University as an integrated model.

According to the Ministry of Education and Busan City on the 27th, a total of 55 applications were submitted for the preliminary application for Glocal Universities nationwide, including 5 integrated cases, 13 alliance cases, and 37 standalone cases. In the Busan area, 12 universities submitted 11 applications, including 1 integrated case, 2 alliance cases, and 8 standalone cases. The Ministry of Education conducted face-to-face evaluations and written inquiries over two days on the 21st and 22nd, ultimately selecting 18 places.

The provisionally designated Kyungseong University plans to transition to a super-realistic convergence campus centered on 'MEGA (Media/Movie, Entertainment, Gala/Mice, Arts)' and promote a 'K-Culture Leading University' based on industry-academic convergence that directly operates production and generates revenue.

Busan University of Foreign Studies aims to standardize and share foreign language education systems based on the educational capacity of more than 50 foreign languages and to create and serve as a hub for foreign language-based data (overseas culture, market, law, etc.) as a global innovation university.

The integrated model of Korea Maritime and Ocean University and National Mokpo Maritime University, as a super-regional model, envisions 'One Nation, One Maritime University Leading Great Ocean Korea' by linking with regional strategic industries to specialize campuses and expand advanced maritime fields, and by fostering field-oriented maritime industry talents to consolidate maritime industry capabilities.

The city is preparing a support system linking local governments, universities, and industries to ensure local universities can be selected in the Glocal University 30 competition, and continues various policy supports such as holding workshops to establish innovation strategies. As the selection of Glocal Universities is finalized this year, the city plans to provide comprehensive support to ensure more local universities are selected, including operating a dedicated team (TF) for provisionally designated universities, developing strategies linked to regional development plans and consulting, and jointly planning and discovering innovation projects.

The provisionally designated universities will prepare joint implementation plans with local governments and regional industries and submit them to the Ministry of Education by August, followed by a joint face-to-face evaluation with local governments and universities, with the final designation results to be announced in September.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, "This year marks the first year of the RISE project led by the city, providing an opportunity for regional and university co-growth through a regional-led university innovation transition," adding, "We will do our best to support Glocal Universities in creating and spreading models of university innovation and serving as a hub for industry-academia cooperation for regional innovation."
