Ministry of Education selects Jeonnam University and 'Chosun University-Chosun Nursing University Integration' as preliminary designated universities
【Financial News Gwangju=Hwang Taejong Reporter】Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that on the 27th, the Ministry of Education selected Jeonnam University (independent) and 'Chosun University-Chosun Nursing University (integrated)' in the Gwangju area as preliminary designated universities for Glocal University 30.
According to Gwangju City, in this preliminary designation review, △Jeonnam University received high marks for presenting a 'human-centered AI (artificial intelligence) talent cultivation education and research innovation university model' based on a top-tier research strategy centered on the Humanities AI Convergence Center and Tech AI Convergence Center, △Chosun University proposed a 'global well-aging leading university model centered on the well-aging industry' based on big data and AI, responding to a super-aged society.
Previously, Gwangju City established a working group to create new innovation models for each university in connection with regional representative industries such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and med-healthcare, providing close support from the early stages of drafting the innovation plan.
Additionally, starting in June, a 'Glocal University Task Force (TF)' will be formed and operated with the Cultural Economy Deputy Mayor (acting Director of Planning and Coordination Office) as the head, involving Gwangju City-university-regional industry collaboration, to jointly draft an implementation plan with the universities, including administrative and financial support, and a collaboration system linked to key industries.
'Glocal University 30' is a national core policy to nurture local universities as hubs of regional innovation, aiming for joint growth of universities and regions, providing up to 100 billion won in national funding per university over five years (up to 150 billion won for integration).
The Ministry of Education selected 10 universities each in 2023 and 2024, and plans to select up to 10 universities for the last time this year.
Preliminary designated universities must submit their Glocal University implementation plans to the Ministry of Education by early August and undergo a final designation evaluation, with up to 10 Glocal Universities to be selected around September.
Kim Kisuk, Director of Education and Youth Bureau of Gwangju City, said, "The innovative models of the two universities in the Gwangju area this time have presented a sustainable education model where the region and the university live together," adding, "Gwangju City will focus administrative power to support the full designation of Glocal University 30, and will do its best in the remaining three months until the final designation."
