The West Coast is a place where hidden gems are scattered, offering the fun of discovering each one. It's not too crowded, and with mountains, fields, and the sea together, it's even better. That's why there's a saying, "There are people who have never been, but no one who goes only once to the West Sea." Let's explore the charm of Chungnam Hongseong and Dangjin, popular as 'SNS photo hotspots'.
Hongseong Sky Tower and Namdanghang Sunset Observatory
The new landmark of Hongseong, the Hongseong Sky Tower, is a gigantic observatory 65 meters high. From the tower's observatory, you can see the West Sea mudflats and the ria coast of Cheonsuman stretching to Boryeong, Taean, and Seosan. The tower's observation deck features a 66-meter circumference panoramic skywalk, allowing you to enjoy the natural scenery and thrill simultaneously. Especially with its transparent glass floor, you can experience the thrill of floating in the air and enjoy the picturesque West Coast sunset.
Next to Hongseong Namdanghang is the Namdang Sunset Observatory, a place to view the beautiful sunset of the West Sea. A red streamlined observatory is installed in the middle of the beach with golden sand, catching the eyes of passersby. The red observatory, seen against the backdrop of the blue sea and green mountains, extends toward the sea, making you feel like you're walking on water.
About 10 minutes by boat from Namdanghang, you can reach Jukdo, the only inhabited island in Hongseong County. The island is named 'Jukdo' because many bamboos grow around it, meaning 'bamboo island'. On Jukdo, located in Cheonsuman between Hongseong and Anmyeondo, you can taste fresh seafood like rockfish, shrimp, and clams all year round, and enjoy both sunrise and sunset. Jukdo is neither too big nor too small, so you can explore the entire island in about 2 hours.
Dangjin Sapgyoho Tourist Site and Nanjido Tourist Site
Dangjin Sapgyoho Tourist Site is a 'photo hotspot' where you can take life photos with green fields and a giant Ferris wheel as a backdrop. The unique atmosphere of the Ferris wheel and the wide fields surrounding it, along with the sea scenery that changes with the seasons, create a distinctive charm. This place, where the West Sea and an artificial lake create a mysterious harmony, always ranks first in Chungnam navigation data search rankings as a 'national tourist site'.
Sapgyoho Tourist Site becomes even more splendid at night. Many travelers from all over the country visit to see the sparkling Ferris wheel. There are also large fish markets and sashimi centers where you can choose and eat fresh seafood, as well as clam grill specialty shops, making it a top destination for gourmet tours on the West Coast.
Dangjin Nanjido Tourist Site, where you can enjoy swimming, island trekking, and marine camping simultaneously, is also a must-visit spot. Recommended by BTS member Suga as a romantic luxury healing island, Nanjido Tourist Site gained fame. It got its name 'Nanji' because many orchids and grasses, the origin of the term 'Jiranjigyo', grow there. The most famous place on this island is Nanjido Beach, known as 'East Sea in the West Sea' because of its clear water and fine sand. Here, you can enjoy various mudflat experiences, including swimming, sea fishing, and clam digging.
Sim Hong-yong, head of the Korea Tourism Organization's Daejeon Chungnam branch, said, "The West Coast is an attractive place where you can confirm its true value by visiting in person," and added, "We plan to actively develop various travel products to widely promote the West Coast, which has endless charm."
