[Financial News] The eldest Korean major leaguer Kim Ha-seong (29, Tampa Bay Rays) is returning. Korean baseball fans now have to follow the performances of Lee Jung-hoo, Kim Hye-seong, and Kim Ha-seong. Sleepless nights are likely to continue.
Kim Ha-seong has announced a successful return. He showcased his resilience by recording multiple hits in his first real game since shoulder surgery.
Kim Ha-seong played for the Durham Bulls, a Triple-A team affiliated with Tampa Bay, in a game against the Memphis Redbirds (affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina, USA, on the 27th (Korean time). Starting as the second designated hitter, Kim Ha-seong contributed to the team's victory by recording 2 hits in 2 at-bats, 1 hit-by-pitch, and 1 stolen base.
Last year, while playing for the San Diego Padres, Kim Ha-seong underwent surgery due to a right shoulder injury at the end of the season. He then acquired free agent status and signed a new contract with Tampa Bay for up to $31 million over two years (approximately 4.31 billion won).
In his first at-bat in the first inning, Kim Ha-seong hit a single to left field by targeting the sinker of opposing starter Curtis Taylor. In the third inning, he reached base after being hit by a pitch when the opposing pitcher's changeup slipped from his hand. In the fifth inning, after hitting a single with one out, he successfully stole second base, showcasing his undiminished skills. He finished the game by being replaced by a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning.
The Tampa Bay team expects Kim Ha-seong to return to the big leagues next month. The team plans to have Kim Ha-seong improve his batting sense as a designated hitter and then evaluate his defensive skills in various positions such as second base, third base, and shortstop before joining the big league.
