Typhoon Committee Discusses Climate Change Response and Disaster Risk Reduction Measures

The National Disaster Management Research Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it will hold the '20th Asia-Pacific Economic and Social Commission (UNESCAP)/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Typhoon Committee Disaster Prevention Division Meeting' from the 27th to the 30th.
The Typhoon Committee was established by UNESCAP and WMO to enable the international community to jointly respond to climate change disasters. Among them, the Disaster Prevention Division is chaired by Korea, leading the annual meeting.
The meeting will be attended by representatives of member countries of the Typhoon Committee and international disaster safety experts, including about 40 domestic and international disaster safety experts.
The meeting will share the latest research and policy trends for responding to the climate crisis and reducing disaster risks, including a keynote speech by the head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Northeast Asia Office.
The strategic direction of the Disaster Prevention Division and the potential for international cooperation development will also be discussed. It is expected that information sharing related to the early warning system will be actively conducted.
Lee Han-kyung, Director of the Disaster Safety Management Headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, "This year marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the Typhoon Committee Disaster Prevention Division meeting," and "As the chair country of the Typhoon Committee Disaster Prevention Division, we will strive to unite the international community to respond to climate change and reduce disaster risks."
