[Financial News] A man who sexually assaulted his stepdaughter for 13 years has been sentenced to 23 years in prison and ordered to pay 300 million won in damages by the court.

According to the Korea Legal Aid Corporation on the 27th, A, who lived with her stepfather without the emotional support of her mother, who had severe mood swings, fell into a state of psychological dependency on her stepfather B through a grooming method of approaching by listening to her stories.

B was found to have committed 2092 acts of quasi-rape, forced molestation, and similar sexual acts over 13 years, from when A was 12 years old until she became an adult.

A's mother, who learned of this fact belatedly, ended her life in great shock. Subsequently, B was arrested following A's complaint.

In the trial supported by the Korea Legal Aid Corporation for A, B was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Additionally, the corporation supported a civil damages lawsuit.

The main issue in the civil lawsuit was the amount of damages. In light of the practice where the damages for traffic accident victims are around 100 million won, there are many cases where the damages for sexual violence victims are recognized as less than 100 million won.

The corporation emphasized that "B's repeated and cruel crimes severely infringed on A's physical and sexual self-determination rights, causing A and her mother irreparable mental suffering."

Accordingly, the court ruled that "B should pay 300 million won in damages," and the decision was finalized as B did not appeal.

Shin Ji-sik, a lawyer at the Korea Legal Aid Corporation, said, "I hope this ruling will be a meaningful turning point in recognizing damages for sexual violence victims."
