Coupang Play announced on the 27th that Newcastle United, a powerhouse of the Premier League, will be the second invited team for the '2025 Coupang Play Series' to be held this summer. Also, Team K League will participate again this year.
Previously, Tottenham, which confirmed participation in the Coupang Play Series, won the 2024/25 Europa League, making it possible for Carabao Cup (League Cup) champion Newcastle to play in Korea. This is the first time in the history of the Coupang Play Series that two Premier League teams have been invited together. Additionally, 'Team K League', composed of K League All-Stars, will join to present a midsummer football festival to domestic fans.
Founded in 1892, Newcastle is a traditional prestigious club that has won the English league four times and the FA Cup six times. Under the management of Eddie Howe, they finished 4th in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season and advanced to the UEFA Champions League, and in the 2024/25 season, they secured a Champions League spot again by finishing 5th in the league. In particular, they won the League Cup for the first time in 70 years by defeating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final last March.
Key players include Alexander Isak, considered one of the best strikers in Europe, Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, Harvey Barnes who models himself after Son Heung-min, former Tottenham player Kieran Trippier, and Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Newcastle stated, “It is very meaningful to visit Korea for the first time in the club's history,” and added, “We are pleased to meet Korean fans directly through the Coupang Play Series and will present the best game.”
Additionally, the best players of the K League will also participate as 'Team K League' to face the Premier League powerhouse Newcastle. In particular, the U22 prospect 'Coupang Young Player', selected through a WOW member vote, is also joining Team K League and is attracting attention. Last year, Yang Min-hyuk was selected as the Coupang Young Player.
