[Financial News] LS Marine Solution is constructing the world's largest submarine cable laying vessel to expand orders for large-scale high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and offshore wind power projects.
LS Marine Solution announced on the 27th that it will invest a total of 345.8 billion won to construct a large laying vessel with a cable loading capacity of 13,000 tons. This is essential core equipment for building a long-distance independent transmission network.
The new ship is an advanced facility that can simultaneously lay HVDC submarine cables and optical cables, and is a high-specification vessel with only three in operation worldwide. It has optimized technological competitiveness for HVDC power grid construction, capable of stable construction in long-distance, high-voltage, and deep-sea environments.
LS Marine Solution is strengthening its technological capabilities in response to the 'West Coast HVDC Energy Highway'. Especially in the submarine section where water tightness is crucial, cable connections must be minimized, and the new laying vessel from LS Marine Solution is evaluated as the only domestic alternative capable of such long-distance continuous laying.
The vessel is designed to be among the world’s top 5 based on cable loading capacity and the largest in Asia. It holds key competitiveness among the 20 or so laying vessels worldwide. Most are concentrated in Europe, and it is significant that Korea is emerging as a major hub in the global supply chain reorganization.
The vessel is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2028 after approximately 2 years of construction. It plans to fully activate the global turnkey order system, covering design, production, and construction, in connection with the U.S. LS Greenlink submarine cable plant, which will start mass production at the same time.
Kim Byeong-ok, CEO of LS Marine Solution, said, “The new laying vessel will be a turning point that enhances national power grid independence and strategic response capabilities, beyond mere equipment expansion,” and added, “Together with LS Cable, we will officially enter into large-scale offshore wind power and ultra-long-distance submarine network construction projects both domestically and internationally.”
