According to local media such as the BBC, the police authorities in Merseyside, UK, held a press conference on the same day and announced the arrest of the suspect in the Liverpool incident. The police stated, "The arrested man is a 53-year-old white British man from Liverpool," and added, "An investigation is underway to understand the circumstances leading to the incident." They further stated, "It appears to be a lone incident with no links to anyone else. This incident will not be investigated as a 'terror act'."
On the same day, in Liverpool, Merseyside, a victory parade for the local football team 'Liverpool FC' was held. The Liverpool team, which recently secured its 20th league title in the English Premier League (EPL), rode on an open-top bus through the city center on the last Monday of May, known as 'Spring Bank Holiday', to showcase the championship trophy to fans. To witness this, hundreds of thousands of people gathered along the approximately 16 km stretch of road.
According to the Guardian, after the main parade ended and road controls were lifted around 6 PM, a small van drove into pedestrians on Water Street in Liverpool. The black van initially collided with one pedestrian and then changed lanes towards the crowd. The vehicle stopped on its own after colliding with several people, and the driver was arrested at the scene.
At least 47 people were injured in this incident, with 27 taken to hospitals for intensive care. Among the injured transported to hospitals were four children, with one child and one adult currently in serious condition.
Liverpool FC announced on social media platform X, "We extend our condolences to those affected by the serious incident that occurred this evening," and added, "We will continue to provide full support to the emergency services and local authorities responding to this incident."
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also wrote on X, "I extend my condolences to all those injured or affected by the horrific scenes in Liverpool," and expressed gratitude to the police and emergency services for their swift response to this shocking incident. Starmer called the mayor of Liverpool on the same day to emphasize, "The whole nation stands with Liverpool."
