【Financial News Ulsan=Choi Su-sang Reporter】Siblings in their 30s were sentenced to a fine for committing all sorts of misdeeds, such as opening a mobile phone in the name of a mentally disabled friend from the same neighborhood they grew up in and diverting loans.
Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 3 Judge Lee Jae-uk announced on the 27th that a 30-year-old woman, Ms. A, and a man, Mr. B, were each fined 10 million won for charges including quasi-fraud.
The siblings deceived Mr. C, a moderately mentally disabled person, in April 2023, saying, "If you open a mobile phone, we will pay the fees well and not make small payments," and had him open two mobile phones in his name.
However, while using the mobile phones in Mr. C's name, they did not pay fees exceeding 1.5 million won each for about seven months, contrary to their promise.
In particular, Ms. A accessed a bank website using Mr. C's mobile phone, took out a loan of 2 million won, diverted about half to her own account, and accessed the bank app to issue a mobile app card.
She then used this app card to make 131 purchases totaling 3.57 million won over two months at an online shopping mall.
Mr. B, the brother, knowing that Mr. C had taken out a loan from the bank, asked him to "lend some money" and received 2.6 million won transferred to his account.
He also verbally abused Mr. C and shouted at him, emotionally abusing him.
The siblings grew up in the same neighborhood as Mr. C from childhood and were well aware of his intellectual disability when committing the crime.
The court stated, "Defendant Ms. A has a similar criminal record, and Mr. B committed this crime during a repeat offense period for another crime," adding, "However, they acknowledged all the crimes and agreed to return part of the damages to the victim, which was considered in sentencing."
